Children in Gaza are on the brink of death. Cold, starvation, and disease are killing them slowly as Israel’s ongoing genocide and blockade continue to strangle life in the region. Dr. Marwan Al-Hams, Director of Field Hospitals at Gaza’s Health Ministry, described a humanitarian crisis that reaches unimaginable levels. Every day, children suffer from malnutrition, untreated illnesses, and a lack of basic supplies.

Rising Death Toll and Health Emergencies
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Dr. Al-Hams reported that more than 30 children died from freezing temperatures. Many others have succumbed to hunger and disease. The sparse canned food supplies often prove unsafe for young children, and contaminated water sparks outbreaks of hepatitis and diarrhea. These outbreaks hit displacement camps where overcrowding and the absence of clean water worsen the crisis.
Crumbling Water and Sanitation Infrastructure
Gaza’s water infrastructure now lies in ruins. Israeli forces destroyed over 60,000 water lines and multiple sewage treatment plants. They also attacked water pumps and sanitation trucks in Khan Younis, leaving families without safe drinking water. This destruction further fuels the health emergency in the region.

Dire Conditions for Infants
The situation for infants and young children is especially alarming. UNICEF closed 21 malnutrition treatment centers amid overwhelming need, and baby formula supplies have nearly run dry. Hospitals now have only enough infant milk to feed 400 babies for one month.
Medical Aid Blocked and Worsening Injuries
Israel’s blockade stops vital medical aid from entering Gaza. Polio vaccines, for example, have not reached the children even as hundreds under the age of ten suffer from the disease. Without intervention, outbreaks may spread to neighboring countries. Hospitals report that women and children make up 75% of the casualties. Many children under 16 suffer severe burns, amputations, and chronic health issues. These injured children receive little to no treatment or pain relief.

A Call for Urgent Action
Gaza’s children face a modern-day humanitarian catastrophe. They are not merely casualties of war; they are victims of a man-made crisis. Starvation, disease, and neglect now drive the suffering. The world cannot afford to look away.
